ABSTRACT
This study sought to assess the impact of Radio Lake Victoria broadcast on environmental
conservation and management in Kisumu County. The objectives of the study were; to examine
the extent to which Radio Lake Victoria has and continues to address environmental
conservation and management in Kisumu County; to analyse the capacity of Radio Lake Victoria
in the promotion of rural development and environmental sustainability in Kisumu County; and
to assess the impact of Radio Lake Victoria environmental programmes on the local
communities in Kisumu County. The study utilised the mixed study approach. The case study
method was also relevant for this study since it allowed for full investigations of the research
questions and the conduct of the research in the natural settings. The study used purposive and
stratified sampling techniques. The study used questionnaires, interviews and observations in
collection of data. The questionnaires were administered among 386 respondents. The data was
coded and analysed using themes and descriptive statistics. The findings of the study reveal that
Radio Lake Victoria has and continues to play its role in the promotion of environmental
knowledge and awareness creations which is its main policy objective and that majority of the
environmental broadcast is accessible and useful to community in Kisumu County according to
73% of the respondents. The study also reveals that Radio Lake Victoria has not adopted the
open-door policy and has not involved the community in programme production and running of
the station. Based on the findings, the study recommends the need to conduct audience analysis
and involve the community in programmes conceptualisations, productions and running of the
station respectively.
