January 7, 2025: Prof. Eddah M. Mutua, (Ph.D., University of Wales, Aberystwyth) is a Professor of Intercultural Communication at St. Cloud State University, Minnesota. She teaches in the area of intercultural communication. Her research focuses on African communication research and education, indigenous African communication systems, development communication, women in grassroots peacebuilding initiatives in post-conflict societies in Eastern Africa, relations between East African refugee and host communities in Central Minnesota, and critical service-learning and civic engagement as vital pedagogical practices in peace education. Her work has received national and international recognition including the award-winning service-learning project she coordinates in Central Minnesota. Prof. Mutua is the 2016 recipient of two prestigious awards at St. Cloud State University namely Hellervik Award and the inaugural St. Cloud University Foundation Award. Other awards include the National Communication Association International and Intercultural Communication Division top faculty paper, and award winning co-edited books Rhetorical Legacy of Wangari Mathaai: Planting the Future and Internationalization of the Communication Curriculum in an Age of Globalization. Her forthcoming co-edited book is “Indigenous African Communication and Media Systems in Digitalized Age” (Rowman & Littlefield). She is currently working on a co-edited volume featuring Invisible Narratives of Peace (Palgrave Springer). Her journal publications appear in Communication Studies Journal, Language and Intercultural Communication, Review of Communication, The Journal of Social Encounters, Qualitative Inquiry, Africa Media Review, African Yearbook of Rhetoric, Women & Language, Text and Performance Quarterly, Qualitative Inquiry and several edited intercultural books. She has served as a guest editor of Africa Media Review and The Journal of Social Encounters special issues on peace communication in Africa.
Prof. Mutua is dedicated to serving the discipline in different capacities. Currently, she serves as a member of the editorial boards of Howard Journal of Communication, Communication Monograph and Journal of Social Encounters, editorial member of Review of Communication and Associate editor of Communication Monographs. She has served on the National Communication Association (NCA) and Central States Communication Association (CSCA) in different elected and invited leadership roles.
Prof. Mutua has presented at international conferences and meetings in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, South Korea, Turkey, South Africa, Portugal, Czech Republic, New Zealand and China as well as national and regional conferences in the U.S. She has done summer study tours in Mexico, Canada, Austria, Japan, Italy, Spain, Dubai, Senegal, Mozambique, and Burundi.
Prof. Mutua is an avid Marathon runner. She competes in local races in Minnesota and North Dakota with her special needs son.
