February 12, 2024: In a first of its kind, the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication - University of Nairobi held a film festival showcasing film projects for the 4th year class.
Media personalities, Mr. Alex Chamwada of Chams Media and Mr. Salim Amin of Camerapix and Founder, Mohammed Amin Foundation graced the event.
Speaking during the festival, Mr. Chamwada challenged the students not to take for granted all the resources at their disposal. He demystified the notion of resources, citing a mobile phone, internet, digital platforms as resources that can now be used by journalists across the world to showcase their work.
He took the final year students down memory lane, of what it meant to get news to the newsroom without the digital devices and technological advancements. He also urged them to maximize on their networks as they bear long lasting fruits in their line of work.
On his part, Mr. Salim Amin took the students through what it means to be trained as a journalist at the Foundation that he heads. He talked about instilling values such as patience, integrity, being able to be diligent in putting in the work, to exercise growth, and to patiently rise.
Zetech University, Multi-media University, St. Paul's University staff and students were also in attendance. Over 30 documentaries were showcased, cutting across various social topics. The films were under the umbrella theme, "Documentary story telling as a catalyst for social transformation."
Mr. Fredrick Ogutu, their Lecturer and the Studio Manager, UNCTV and UNCRadio congratulated the students for a job well done as he evaluated the different documentaries showcased throughout the day. Other Lecturers from UoN and other Universities ,
Dr. George Gathigi, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication undergraduate coordinator and also the exams officer, represented Prof. Silas O. Oriaso, Chairman, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Nairobi.
