Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study evaluated how audiences in the informal settlements perceive peace building initiatives messages from the community radios broadcasting within their localities. The study evaluated whether community radios have enough capacities to disseminate peace building initiative messages to the residents of the informal settlements and the challenges that the audiences face while trying to unpack those messages. The reception theory was utilized. A sample size of 399 was used having been determined through the formula advanced by Yamane et al.(1983). The sampling method that was used to get samples was simple random sampling. A mixed method approach that is both quantitative and qualitative research methods was used in the study. The study revealed that the audiences of community radios will always respond to the peace initiative messages depending on how and where the messages have been packaged. It’s for this reason that the professionals in these community radios should understand the kind of programmes that their audience like and then package those messages through those programmes. The study concluded that peace building initiatives messages should not just be channeled to the targeted audience without minding on how the perceived audience receive and I interpret the messages. There is need to ensure that messages that are communicated over the community radio for peace are communicated in a language that the audience majority of them will easily understand and identify with for the communication to be easily be delivered.
